Well, that's the truth of it, sorry to disappoint. I turned into an enormous fuck-off skeleton called Death, someone murdered us, and I fell when all that mass disappeared.

I wish I coulda seen that. All I saw were Hunter's uncle and that smelly guy who knew you and Sypha. [ oh wait! ] Hey, did he ever find you? I dunno who that man was but he was really intent on trying to find you.

[oh christ. Trevor grimaces, covering his face with a hand]

He nearly killed Hunter. He murdered Adrian, Rags, and probably others. He's Death. He just hadn't shown what he really looked like to you yet.

[ what the fuck. ]

Wait, Death death? What the hell were you doing pissing off Death?

Nothing! I just was in the wrong place at the right time, is all.

And don't fucking fight Death. He's an evil bastard and I don't have my weapons on me anymore.

I'll get you a weapon then, [ she says, with no hesitation. ] I don't have your girlfriend as a temp anymore, I'm sure I can bully the newer one into getting me something that I'll give to you.

Doesn't matter. Got a curse on me that won't let me get in the middle of a fight. Even with Death itself.

Anyway, what you need to defeat Death is a special god-killing weapon. Something extremely holy or unholy.

[ wait, what ]

Who put that curse on you? Was it your warden? [ because if so, she will YELL AT LARK. ]

[Trevor grins and nods. He's very angry about it all, but he's saving his anger for his own talk with Lark, if and when he comes sniffing around]

Yeah. I got in the middle of a warden-inmate fight by way of a flung knife and the warden was Lark's brother.

You want to know what pisses me off the most about it all? That he wasn't satisfied with the curse. I had so much shit I had to work for from Flotilla and beyond, things that I loved, that had stayed with me for a year or longer. All of it's vanished. I hate that he stole things I earned.

[ Oh she is absolutely going to yell at Lark about this. Kyoko's not even bothering to hide the anger and annoyance as this conversation continues. ]

What a jackass. And an idiot! We've got all sorts of bullshit in this place, even if you can't attack, you've gotta have a way to defend yourself!

Jackass, yes. Idiot, no.

It’s more like I can defend myself if my life’s in danger. But if your life is in danger and there’s a warden nearby - or, fuck it, a warden hurting you - I can’t do jack shit except with my fists.

That's stupid, [ she says, with no hesitation. ] Your warden's stupid. Someone's gonna take advantage of that and fuck you over at some point.

Probably, but that doesn’t scare me.

What scares me is being in a position where I see something bad happening or about to happen and I can’t stop it.

[ There's a pause before Kyoko answers, ]

If something bad happens, call me. Sypha gave me my magic back. I'll protect you, Trevor.

[There are a lot of things that Trevor could say to that. How it's literally his job and purpose to protect other people. How anything else feels like such a waste and would be spitting on the graves of his family. How he already did that for ten years and hated himself and is slowly beginning to hate himself again for this uselessness. That he's not someone who ever wanted to be protected.

But he says none of it just yet, and lets his expression turn to one of curiosity. He promised he would do his best not to infect Kyoko with his personal brand of bitterness]

Yeah? Thanks. What kind of magic can you do?

I'm stronger, faster, and more durable in my magical girl form than in my normal form. And I can also summon my weapon. I use a spear that can break up into chunks and turn into a whip.

[ Kyoko grins, proud of herself as she nods at Trevor. ]

I'll show you more when you're better.

Really? My family weapon's a whip, too. I'd like to see that. Ours doesn't turn into anything else, but I'm fairly sure it contains a soul of a woman who died 500 years ago.

[He gives a grin back, hiding most of his weariness.]

[ There's a pause before Kyoko grins. ]

You know, Sypha gave me my magic back. I can show you whenever you want. But I'm only gonna show you when you're better and not in the hospital anymore.

What? Come on. There's plenty of room here.

[mycitynow]

Yeah, but I'm not gonna get yelled at if we fight somewhere else.

Afraid of the infirmary wardens? I see.

[mycitynow]

Who are the infirmary wardens anyway? That Tiffany girl? I could beat her up.

She might look small, but she's tough. I wouldn't underestimate her.

Then there's Alec, whose husband is my warden. And Dracula, of course.

I haven't really talked to either of them, [ she admits. ] But I'd probably not want to piss off Dracula just cause Hunter'll get grumpy at me if I do.
